Maria Bevilacqua

Maria Bevilacqua began studying Yoga in 1998 at the Sadana Yoga Studio in her native state of
Pennsylvania. Her first teacher was Angelique Sneeden, a true master in Ashtanga Yoga, who influenced
and deepened Maria’s personal practice. However, Maria’s teacher training was focused in Hatha and
Iyengar styles of Yoga. In 2006, Maria completed her 200-hour yoga certification in Pittsburgh and is a
registered with Yoga Alliance. Her teaching style strives to blend these yoga traditions by strengthen the
mind/body connection and linking the breath with movement to create harmony and balance. Maria’s
classes are designed to provide her students with the opportunity to explore the parallels of yoga on the
mat and yoga in real life. She creates a compassionate place to grow in mind, body and spirit.

Profile

Maria Bevilacqua is an accomplished photographer and a gifted artist whose work reflects her own life’s
inspirations and challenges. Her provocative black and white photographs provide insight to landscapes
existing in both reality and fantasy, past and present.

Traveling extensively in Italy and the US Midwest, Maria provides an intuitive window to our earth’s
changing landscape and our own changing lives.

Maria lay the foundation for her career in artistic photography by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1982. She has held over a dozen exhibits since the early 1990’s
and has been published several times since 1996. Her work is in the corporate collections of many local
companies, including: PPG Corporation, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, Centimark, Fore Systems,
Mosites Construction, and Kolano Design.

Maria’s work has been reviewed by Thomas Robertello of ARTWORDS; Volume 1#3 in November 1996. He
states, “Maria Bevilacqua’s black and white photographs of Italian country scenes are an exercise in
duality and transition. There is a brooding darkness matched with an illuminating sense of hope in each
photo. Each piece is an unresolved locale, setting the stage for isolation, waiting for change...They
fervently dominate the gallery with their strength and contemplative atmosphere.”

Her latest award, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art Exhibition Award, was received in 1999 from
the Associated Artist 89th Annual Exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

She is the owner of Maria Bevilacqua Photography and president and owner of Sorella Sorella, Inc.,
Specialty Foods maker of Maria’s Biscotti.

Artist's Statement

Dream Crossing: the Confluence of Illusion & Reality
Standing at a crossroads, I come to this place with the intention of creating a beautifully interesting and
modern way of seeing a landscape. My plan is a prayer, a dialogue, a meditation with nature and the
gathering of answers. My approach to this process is shooting alternative films, using obscure cameras
and traveling.

Yielding to the creative magic, a mystery is revealed. However, I am blinded by the intended outcome of
the actual results. I let the negatives rest is a drawer for 5 years. Through the eyes of a friend I realize I
may have created a rare new technique.

Using a Dianna Camera I create a visual echo by overlapping the composition. This fragmentation
suggests the passage of time and creates an evocative rather than descriptive image. The imagery is
misty, atmospheric, intuitive and spontaneous.
It creates an invitation, a window, into a world that questions our perceptions. This repetition suggests
memory of a moment past and reveals a map for the future.

The majesty of Wyoming evokes the following questions. Can we make our dreams a reality? Can thinking
in a new way change our perceptions? Can believing in the impossible create a new reality? As I sit at the
edge of the Snake River the pray is answered.
Listening, I hear, let go, release the past, take a leap of faith and move into the future. This is the
beginning of a new life, a deep trust in
self. Fear is gone, replaced with understanding, a grand understanding of a life’s purpose.

These images are the departure, the answer and the gift.
